A very diverse community lives within the Strathcona neighbourhood, and this is reflected in the shops, cafes and eateries throughout the area. Housing in Strathcona can vary with single-family homes, multi-family homes like duplexes, or townhomes and condos. This availability of housing types will depend greatly on the placement within the neighbourhood, with condos and townhomes concentrated around mass transit, such as SkyTrain stations.

Culture & Creativity in Strathcona, Vancouver East

Strathcona has a long history stretching back to being one of the earliest settled areas of Vancouver. Its history involves railroads, population growth, diaspora communities and even touches of stardom. Rock musician Jimi Hendrix once lived in this neighbourhood, specifically near Hogan’s Alley, as he lived with his grandmother. Today, this diversity is best seen in the neighbourhood’s culture and creativity. 

Strathcona’s culinary landscape reflects its storied multicultural tapestry, allowing for international cuisine to manifest in various restaurants and cafes, while also allowing for up-and-coming talents to flex their creativity and push boundaries. For as many sandwich shops, coffee roasters and cocktail bars there are family restaurants, breweries and vegan cafes. Some of these proprietors take a multi-talented approach to their business, mixing food service with selling locally-produced or thoughtfully-curated wares. As a result, it’s always an adventure to find a new place in Strathcona. 

The neighbourhood boasts many community amenities such as the Vancouver Japanese Language School, the nə́cÌ“aÊ”mat ct Strathcona Public Library, the Strathcona Community Centre, and the Strathcona Residents Association. There are further community resources and organisations which put on cultural events and experiences, reflecting the area’s storied past as a gathering place for immigrant diaspora communities.

Opportunities to Enjoy Strathcona Outdoors

There are lots of opportunities for recreation and enjoyment in the Strathcona Neighbourhood. Chief among these is Strathcona Park. At Strathcona Park there is a Community Garden, a Running Track, Tennis Court and Skatepark. Additionally, Trillium Park’s playing fields and Thornton Park provide outdoor spots to enjoy sunny days. Towards the western edge of the Strathcona neighbourhood, the False Creek Seawall is within close proximity providing pedestrians and cyclists a picturesque oceanfront path.
